Windows Live Movie Maker is a simple yet powerful video editing tool for home users who would like to edit and publish their short movies and photos. This video editing tool is a part of the Windows Live Essentials software suite and developed by Microsoft.

A short look to the history of Windows Movie Maker

The history of this tool starts a few years ago, when the Windows Movie Maker appears in some editions of Windows operating system. The popularity of the Windows Movie Maker rapidly grew up and it became one the most popular video editing tool for beginners and home users.

However, in the year 2008 Microsoft announced that the classic version - Windows Movie Maker - will be discontinued in Windows 7, together with Windows Mail (Outlook Express' ancestor) and Windows Gallery known from Windows Vista.

Windows 7's users are able to download the Windows Live Essentials software suite, which is also available for the Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Windows Live era begins

The first version of Windows Live Essentials Wave 3 comes with the whole new application called Windows Live Movie Maker. It was announced as a replacement for the old Windows Movie Maker. However its first version was an beta and looks very limited. My personal opinion was, it looks like a better Photo Story for Windows.

In the August 2009 the Windows Live Essentials Wave 3 has got an update with the first final version of the Windows Live Movie Maker.

User interface of Windows Live Movie Maker

The classic Windows Movie Maker had an old style school user interface with menus and toolbars. The new Windows Live Movie Maker has a modern user interface represented by the Ribbon panel.

Forgot the scenario and timeline mode. Windows Live Movie Maker combines this both mode together for better and faster editing by the common users. Yes, this tool is not mentioned to be for professionals. However for common video editing and publishing your videos to the online services is good enough.

You can use your mobile phone or camera movies, photos and sounds, mix it together (manually or with an automatic function) and publish the final video to your disc or upload it to YouTube with one click.
